Certainly this book will annoy some with its portrayal of women, but I also think it is important for many novels that we recognize the time and context in which they were written over 40 years ago, in France and by a male and not overlay it with the evolving and changing values of today. Recreating 16th and 17th century France through the eyes of a fictitious Protestant doctor turned spy, he went so far as to write it in the period’s French making it virtually untranslatable.
That meant he was about to counterattack. The protagonist is Emanuel Comte, former school directornow turned farmer and landowner.

We are given snipets of information about the participants in the survival, but the greatest part of the book is dedicated to the emotional, physical, and yes, the spiritual survival of the members. Setting aside these flaws, I believe that Robert Merle provides a realistic interpretation of a reset of human civilization.
May 13, Ali Najafiyan rated it liked it. In fact, there was only one copy in ALL th While considering possible apocalyptic novels to read, I remembered reading a novel in the late 70s that I enjoyed. Malfvil civilization whose progress it was there to record had ceased to exist.

Once again it was an absolutely enjoyable read. Fortunately a few hardy souls have downloaded the entire novel onto the internet and you can downland it onto your computer for free. The setting, an old castle in the French countrysid Post-apocalyptic novels are really studies in human nature and provoke introspection. I’d not attempted Proust the last time I read this book, so I had my laugh out loud moment, and sigh for the day.
Like Frank’s classic there is a feeling that Merle is romanticizing the “good old days” just a little though and ,like Frank’s novel, Merle’s malecil are very lucky. The survivors find their surroundings reduced to ashes and rubble.
