Eventually, her father tells her where Cole is and Birdie sennaa with her long lost sister. For example, about half-way through the book, Birdie starts referring to a deep and experimentally homosexual relationship she had formed with a friend while living in a commune with her mother post-separation. I also wonder not just about the physical appearance but the other aspects that make up character, that connect a child to a parent, that allow a child to understand themselves and their inclinations, interests etc.

I had never heard of Danzy Senna and picked this up at the library on a whim. They have been primarily home schooled and they start at a black school set up to delve deeply into black history. The story is mostly Birdie’s, and it is from her perspective that the book examines the struggle of being true to the heritage handed down from each parent dazy yet being your own person. Growing up in a racially tense decade of the ’70s is rough when you’re bi-racial.

It’s changing but so slowly it’s almost imperceptible.

Birdie appears to be white, while Cole is dark enough to fit in with the other kids at the Afrocentric school they attend. Senna also explores themes of invisibility and disappearing.
